5 Ways To Stay Motivated During 2020

5 Ways To Stay Motivated During 2020
Happy New Year! — LAMOSE Team

First of all, we want to wish you a happy new year and thank you for an amazing 2019.

It's a new year, new decade, and ultimately a new you. Let's face it, 2020 is going to be a big year for a lot of us. We want to see you succeed at whatever it is that you want to do this year, so we put together a list of 5 things you can do to stay motivated this year! Let's get into it.

1) Don't Make Resolutions

Step number one is to not make resolutions. But wait - then why does everyone make new years resolutions? New years resolutions just simply don't get done. They are things that people want to attain, or it's something that people like the idea of but won't commit to. Sure they might have a new years resolution, be excited about it for a few weeks and then it starts to fizzle out and get forgotten until the end of the year when they realize they didn't do what they had wanted to do.  Now that you have step one out of the way, you should feel pretty excited that you're already on your way. Let's get started on step number two.

2) Set GOALS and Set Them RIGHT

The key to success here is to set GOALS rather than resolutions. The difference between the two is that goals are typically actionable matters that are broken down in order to achieve. The way to set goals is to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. You may have even heard of this before.

S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Based

There are tons of articles explaining this principle in more detail, but essentially, if your goal setting checks off each of these attributes, then you're doing it right. Additionally, it is CRUCIAL to write down your goals. Writing down your goals makes it tangible. It becomes a physical piece of your life and will hold you more accountable than keeping those goals in the back of your head. When goals are written down, it makes it much easier to be broken down into reasonable steps while keeping the big picture in mind. Think about this: it's much easier to think about making it to the next stepping stone than it is to get all the way across to the other side of the pond.

3) Surround Yourself With Good People

There's nothing worse than being around a negative Nancy or a grumpy Gregory. These people are always bringing others down and are rarely supportive. So stay away from these people! Realistically, you may not be able to avoid them entirely, but keep that in mind and focus more on the other people that are positive and uplifting.

By surrounding yourself with more people like this, you'll be able to have the positive feedback, encouragement and reinforcement that you need to stay on track. You'll be able to talk about goals rather than keeping them to yourself. One of the best ways to reach a goal is to talk about it everyday. It's a constant reminder of what you want to accomplish.

4) Stay Hydrated, Eat Well, Rest

Health and wellness is a key element in staying motivated. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle boosts both energy levels and focus among other benefits. Once in a good routine, it's much easier to continue this cycle of both practicing healthy habits and motivating yourself.

One of our brand ambassadors, Brittany Miller has a fantastic article on Why You Should Be Drinking More Water.

Staying hydrated isn't the only thing. It is just as important to eat the right things and get the right amount of rest. Putting the right things into your body naturally energizes you rather than temporary bursts of energy from things like caffeinated energy drinks that you end up crashing on. Which leads us to our next thing - rest. It's key to take breaks and get the proper amount of rest. Focusing too much on one thing will often result in burning out and losing motivation. Smaller, more frequent breaks allow you to keep wanting to work on the task ahead.

5) Reward Yourself

Remember how we mentioned breaking down your goals into smaller steps? During each of these steps, reward yourself. Build yourself incentives to keep you going until you reach the end goal. The mistake people make here the most is giving themselves a reward much too big for what has been accomplished. Rewards should be just big enough to make you want it, but small enough that you don't fall off track. Keep in mind, the very end goal should be the reward at the end. The goal you set should be big enough that accomplishing it is the reward. The smaller rewards in between just help you get there!
